SPACE
25 APRIL – 20 MAJ

At first glance, a canvas is flat, but throughout history, different artists have worked to fill and transform the surface. An experience of space can be created in very different ways. And the space in a picture is of great importance for how the viewer is involved. Therefore, the exhibition will feature works that are very different, each engaging the viewer in their own way in their perception of space.
In the Middle Ages, most pictures had just a gold leaf background that symbolized the sky, and that was all they wanted to show. In Cubism, for example, they worked with a very flat picture space, but where they saw an object from several angles at once, thus almost creating a space that included time as an extra dimension. And in other periods, it has been important for artists to work on reproducing a three-dimensional space completely correctly, such as in the Renaissance, where they calculated their way to linear perspective.
The starting point for spatial perception is the establishment on the visual level of a relationship between surface and depth (Maurice Merleau-Ponty), a relationship that is variable and depends on the general perception of space. Since this mode of perception is of a mental rather than a physiological nature, the spatial relationship mentioned is not of an objective nature, but is conditioned, among other things, by the prevailing understanding of reality at any given time. When it comes to the natural surroundings and architecture, the perception of space relates to real space, while in the visual arts it is based on a spatial illusion.
Opening Friday the 25th of April at 3 pm.
