Fyns Grafiske Værksted presents an exhibition of graphic works by John Olsen in March.

In John Olsen’s unsentimental and powerful depictions of nature’s growth and decay, we gain a deeper understanding of death as a prerequisite for the continuation of life. Of joy and pain. Of loss and pleasure. For “life will,” as he so often declared.

The exhibition presents a comprehensive selection of John Olsen’s graphic works, offering the public a rare opportunity to get close to one of the most significant and uncompromising voices in Danish art. At a time when human-made environmental and climate disasters have firmly entered the global agenda, his art appears more relevant than ever.

John Olsen’s works consistently take their point of departure in nature—the very nature in which he lived and worked with an almost symbiotic intensity. Here he found his motifs, his inspiration, and often his materials. In close studies of waste heaps and the mountains of the Faroe Islands, he captured what is overlooked and disregarded. Small details grow in his hands into monumental, condensed structures with a raw beauty entirely their own.

His gaze was not romanticizing, but investigative and insistent. In his choice of perspective, he moves in close to the surfaces of nature—as something seen, experienced, and lived. The graphic works reveal an artist who, with precision and force, unites the organic and the existential. Decay and fertility coexist; dissolution becomes beginning.
